Accepting the disability

Oh my, I need a wheel chair…

For all who became disabled at some point of their conscious life, especially if reason was quick and unexpected accident or medical condition, the first shock is great. But remember, as always humans can adopt, and therefore we survive - we are adapting and surviving specie. The best remedy for initial shock is ability to continue with existing, “normal” life style as close as possible, and to keep social bonds and relations.

One of the best ways to mimic or return to the normal life style is to be as independent as disabled can be. This is especially true for mobility, where independence, without the need for personal assistant, nurse or anyone’s help is a big step forward, and when effective provenly gives person multiple psychological beneficial effects, including raises self esteem.

Electrical wheel chair

Getting mobile with electrical wheel chair is in my mind one of the best ways to be mobile. Even healthy people tend to use the electrical scooters, electrical steeps and elevators to move from point A to point B, and to conserve strength in between. So why use electrical wheel chair and not the ordinary plain wheel chair? Many doctors suggest non electrical wheel chair only to partly disabled, who still have full strength in their upper part of the body, and who would like to participate in various sports activities and maybe even competitions. Answer lies in stamina and durability, and with electrical wheel chair, also known as power chair (powerchair) or electrical scooter (motorized scooter), one can conserve strength for other activities, like getting in or out of the wheel chair, quality work at office or doing more things at home, and especially to keep positive and honest relations with people around them. My friend always joked that he feels better and more dignified knowing that when he comes home, he can wipe his own ass clean, rather than to look more independent when moving around in normal, non electrical wheel chair in public.

How to reach ease of mind - Difficulties with accepting the disability

The cure for this state is called TALK and LISTEN. Several of our community members have gone thru this, and the process was  quick for some, and it took years for others. The best way to overcome the problem is to accept it. There are several support groups around, and it is best to talk with your friends, families and we suggest you join your local support group (there is one in almost every big hospital or social center). Do not be shy to mention your thoughts and difficulties to your doctor as well, since he/she might get you some professional help!

But please - do talk, and listen to others! We are in this together, but at least we have a second chance, we we are alive! Science and technology progresses with speed of light in these last years, and anything is possible!
